"Where does your inspiration come from? Are they dreams? Stories? Myths?"I hear these questions over & over. My images slowly take form, usually starting with one element that comes from any number of sources: something I have read, seen, thought about, or "seen" in my head. The next element then appears as a response to what is first put down. It is a completely intuitive process for me and has nothing to do with illustrating a story. The paintings originate in my imagination strictly as visual images. For me, it is an exploration........never knowing ahead of time what it will become. I paint primarily in two different mediums: gouache and watercolor on Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, or acrylic on stretched 11oz. canvas, often with collaged or other mixed media elements, such as beading and shells. In both mediums, I build up the colors in thin layers of paint, which adds to the richness of color. The gouaches on paper tend to be smaller-they range in size from about 16" x 20" and go up to 22" x 30". My smallest canvases are about 24" square and the largest at this time are about 40" x 50". My work in either medium is characterized by fine detail and jewel-like colors. My artwork is often compared to that of Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varos.
