Ernesto's work is mixed media and multicultural, incorporating influences from his studies in Asia and Indonesia, his Mexican-American upbringing, his travels through Europe and Latin America and his southern California childhood. For over 35 years, Ernesto studied and performed the art of mask making and mask dancing in Japan, Indonesia and Latin America. A key element in masked performance is the dancer's ability to channel and evoke different energies and emotional states. It is this capacity that Ernesto brings to his masks, sculptures, and altar-making. Each of his pieces -- be they small household altars, life size sculptures, or walk-in spirit houses -- contain specific energies that are meant to create a particular emotional and spiritual response in the viewer. He has been heralded as a master of masks and mime and has been awarded numerous commissions, awards and grants. In 1993, under the auspices of the US-Japan Friendship Commission, he lived in Japan for one year where he shifted his focus from performance to the visual arts. Ernesto’s studio in Pt. Reyes Station is a world of angels, hearts, masks and spirit houses. In this enchanted setting, Ernesto creates pieces that act as portals for the spirit and vehicles for personal discovery.
