Born in Sacramento, CA in the mid 1950's, Paula Fava grew up behind a Firehouse, informing her choices later in life to become a San Francisco Firefighter. Now retired & living in West Marin, Fava has allowed a lifetime of creativity & experience to come thru her fingers, working in both encaustics & acrylics ... texture & color being her guide. Primarily using a torch in her encaustic work, Paula Fava lays down layers of molten pigmented wax on top of a roofing compound base. Once the torch heats the wax, the roofing compound reacts to create earthy, guttural images. Possibility & surprise are like mantras as she creates art which replicates the layers of a life well-lived. Recent trips to India have woven a richness of spiritual culture & imagery into her artwork. Fava's goal is to heal heartbreak thru the simple viewing of her work. Concurrent with having her studio open for the Thanksgiving Open Studio event, Paula Fava will also have a solo show at Gallery Route One in Pt Reyes Station, entitled 'Elementals' Layers of Possibility in Wax & Acrylic from October 31 thru December 7, 2008.. "The rich luminosity of encaustics is directing my recent works. Possibility is my motto. Mostly though, my art evolves as I continue to let go, shed my personality & allow myself to go deeper into the stillness that is me, as I get lost in the process of art making" states Fava. Being in a place of risk ... whether in life, work or art ... helps Fava develop the acceptance of what comes without judgment. Her strength, coupled with a deep sensitivity allows an opening to channel this work. With blessings & gratitude … thank you for experiencing this work.
